Bill P. Godfrey et al
Welcome to my incredibly stupid website. This was my pride and joy from '04 to '07. I've since rescued it from its barely- functioning state and I'm presenting it here.

I hope you enjoy it.

Switched on comment moderation

I've been getting quite a few spam comments on this site in the past week. So as a bit of an experiement, I've switched on the comment moderation facility. If the spam flood dies down, I'll switch it off again.

I'd like to put my regular commenters on auto-approve. (Thia, Rori, M, samsarajade, Gamma Goblin and K.) Anyone know how to do that?
Personally, I'm not keen on the "captcha" method. In theory, this would prevent robots yet allow humans to comment. My problem with this is that I don't care about the robot-ness of a comment. I do care about the spam-ness of a comment.

If a legitimate commenter wants to use a robot, I have no problem with that. I can't think of a good reason why anyone would want to, but someone else may have an idea that I've not thought of.

Of course, this only applies to my blog. Other people will have their own policy and that's just fine by me. All blogs are private servers (except the few maintained by those in public office) and no-one has a right to use other people's private property as a platform for their speech.

  • Good stuff Bill. I hate the "magic" verification word system too but I'd rather put up with loosing the ease for people to comment than having the feeling of disappointment after seeing that a new comment is just spam.

    Have a look at the comment before your last comment on my blog. Jeez, magic words dont put some people off!

  • I'd love to use a robot to comment - particularly if I could use this one;

    "Go answer the blogs" I'd say

    "Need input" it'd say.

    Oh the jolly times we would have ho, ho, ho.

  • I hate spam comments. Over at http://clangnuts.com I often have to delete spam comments.

    Getting hundreds of spam comments on http://clangnuts.com isn't much fun.

    Hopefully your blog will be as free of spam comments as http://clangnuts.com is now.
