In theory.

This textbook contains material on gravity. Gravity is a theory, not a fact. This material should be approached with an open mind, studied carefully, and critically considered.

  • "Newton's so-called universal law of gravitation is unfair to students who don't believe in gravity"

Which harks back, in my mind, to the Monty Python sketch where a new high-rise block of flats is held up by the willpower of the tenants.... maybe it doesn't. It does make me laugh [and that was probably Bill's point... well... not to make me laugh... but... I had previously read that certain schools were slapping stickers on physics books saying "this is just a theory"]

What do the people who don't believe in gravity believe? That things that are heavy fall to the earth and things that are light don't? That we all secrete a substance from our bodies that hold us to the ground? That God holds us here and were we to displease him he'd let us float of into space before asphyxiating or suffering explosive decompression or what-have-you.

"I don't want to say that these people are idiots but they obviously don't know a whole hell of a lot about physics."
